TURUL SQUARE
Budapest XII, 2004

The intersection of the three main arteries at the foot of the hill is an important traffic hub. For long, the local government had intended to erect a memorial to the local victims of World War II. The unusual alignment of the lines and the steep slope of the terrain required dynamic spatial arrangement. The huge stone block of the pedestal emerges from the bursting ground, and the forces emerging from the deep are balanced along the retaining walls. The stones of our lives are connected by the name of our dead like mortar. A metallic band is wedged into the joints of the limestone-clad pedestal, engraved with the names of more than a thousand victims. This technique has since been widely applied. The bronze turul bird is the work of Boldizsár Szmrecsányi.
